What Counts as Clean Yard Waste

This matters because clean vegetative debris is frequently diverted to mulch and compost rather than landfilled. Clean means branches, limbs, palm fronds, leaves, grass, hedge trimmings, brush and untreated stumps — and nothing else. The moment fencing, plastic sheeting, bagged trash, treated lumber or general household debris goes in, the whole load is mixed waste. The Thing People Get Wrong: Soil

Dirt, sod, sand and rock are not yard waste for container purposes — they're heavy debris. A 15 yard filled with soil is far past legal lifting weight even though it barely looks full, so soil and sod go in a 10 yard. Same for landscape rock and paver base. If a landscaping job produces brush and soil together, that's genuinely two containers, and we'd rather say so at booking than send a truck that can't lift what's there.

What Can't Go In

No soil, sod, rock or sand in the yard-waste can. No treated lumber or fencing if you want the load diverted. Never any hazardous material — and garden sheds are full of it: pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer concentrates, fuel for the mower, propane. All of that needs separate household hazardous waste disposal, not a roll-off.
