Donate first — give usable items a second life
Before it goes in a dumpster, ask whether it could be donated. Furniture, working appliances, and building materials are all in demand locally, and donating keeps good stuff out of the landfill — often with free pickup for the big pieces.
The Habitat for Humanity ReStore is the workhorse for furniture, cabinets, and building materials, and schedules free pickup for larger items at (352) 401-0075. For clothing, housewares, and smaller furniture, Goodwill, The Salvation Army, Interfaith Emergency Services, Brother’s Keeper, and Helping Hands Ocala are all solid options — the City of Ocala’s Reuse Resources page keeps an updated list.

What can’t go in a roll-off or curbside bin
These items can’t legally go in a rented dumpster or your regular trash — they belong at the county’s Household Hazardous Waste collection at the Baseline Landfill:
- Wet paint & stains
- Motor oil & fuels
- Pool & yard chemicals
- Propane & pressurized tanks

- TVs, monitors & e-waste

Where those items actually go
All of the above is Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) — accepted at the county’s Marion County Baseline Landfill. Call ahead to confirm what they’ll take that day, since accepted materials can change. Dropping most HHW is free for residents; general household trash is charged by the load.

Tricky items — electronics, tires, appliances & mattresses
Some things need special handling. Here’s the short version:
Electronics (e-waste)
TVs, computers, and monitors shouldn’t go in the trash — take them to a county drop-off or an HHW event.
Tires & batteries
Accepted through the county’s special-waste program, not curbside or in a roll-off.
Freon appliances
Refrigerators, freezers, and A/C units need proper refrigerant recovery — the ReStore or a hauler handles them correctly.
Mattresses
Not recyclable curbside; a hauler or the landfill’s bulky-waste area is the move.
