Mattresses are the classic example of a bulky item that's terrible for landfills and excellent for recycling. They don't compact — the springs push back — so they take up disproportionate airspace, and they can trap air pockets that cause problems in a compacted cell. That's precisely why so many collection programs exclude them and why a lot of transfer stations charge a separate bulky-item fee for each one.

The upside is what's actually inside. A typical innerspring mattress holds roughly 25 pounds of recoverable steel in the coils and border rod, plus polyurethane foam, cotton and felt padding, and a timber frame in the box spring. Processors that handle mattresses strip those streams apart: steel goes to scrap, foam is shredded and reprocessed into carpet underlay, cotton and fibre become industrial filters and insulation, and the timber is chipped for mulch or fuel. All told, around three-quarters of a mattress by weight can be diverted.

We route mattresses to recycling wherever a facility accepts them, and only what genuinely can't be processed goes to a permitted disposal site. The exceptions are honest ones: anything soaked through, badly mold-damaged, or coming out of a bed-bug treatment can't be recycled or donated and has to be disposed of — and in the bed-bug case, sealed before it leaves the room.

Retailer haul-away is worth using when it's genuinely available, and it usually costs little or nothing. The catch is the conditions: it typically only happens on the day the new mattress is delivered, the old one often has to be bagged and clear of obstructions, and delivery crews will refuse a mattress that's soiled, wet or infested. It also doesn't help at all if you're getting rid of a mattress without buying a replacement — a spare room being converted, a tenant's leftovers, a house being cleared.

Doing it yourself means getting a mattress into a vehicle it doesn't fit in, finding a facility that accepts it, and paying a bulky-item fee at the gate. For one mattress and a pickup truck that's a workable afternoon. For a king set out of a second-floor apartment with no lift, it's a genuinely bad idea — this is the item that produces the most "we got it stuck in the stairwell" stories of anything we handle.
